FPSFlow: Rendering Pipeline Culling and Performance Tuning
A FPSFlow guide. Covers FPSFlow 1.8.3 on Minecraft 26.2.
FPSFlow implements focused optimizations targeting bottlenecks across entity rendering, level of detail processing, and interface redraws to maintain stable framerates.
Dynamic entity and block culling
Within the "FPSFlow Settings", global adjustments can be applied quickly by selecting a "Performance Profile". Core overhead is managed under "Entity Culling" via "Enable Entity Culling". When activated, "Occlusion Culling" uses line-of-sight checks to avoid drawing models hidden behind opaque geometry, while "Async Occlusion" distributes these calculations across multiple ticks to avoid sudden frame spikes. Fine-tuning the frequency of checks is handled through "Cache Update Interval (ticks)". Players can also toggle "Painting Back-Face Culling" to discard paintings viewed from reverse angles.
Tile models are handled separately under "Block Entity Culling" through "Enable Block Entity Culling". This lets players establish a "Maximum Render Distance" so that faraway containers, signs, and decorative containers stop drawing until approached. Additionally, activating "Singleplayer Boost" tightens culling rules during local sessions to preserve processor capacity for background chunk tasks.
Render throttling and level of detail
High entity counts in crowded pens or mob farms are streamlined through "Entity LOD". Toggling "Enable Entity LOD" staggers update frequencies across distant targets, applying "Medium LOD Distance" and "Far LOD Distance" thresholds to step down rendering cadences without causing immediate pop-in. Distance labels are also moderated under "Nameplate Culling", where "Nameplate dist" hides overhead nametags beyond specified boundaries.
Visual effects and decorative frames receive similar pacing. Under "Particle Optimization", turning on "Enable Particle Limits" establishes thresholds for "Maximum Active Particles" and "Maximum Particle Distance" to prevent particle swarms from stalling performance. Meanwhile, "Map Frame Throttle" activates through "Enable Map Frame Throttle", employing a configurable "Map Update Interval (ticks)" to govern how frequently display maps refresh their textures.
Interface caching and background limits
Redundant HUD redraws are curbed through "GUI Optimization". Enabling "Enable GUI Optimization" introduces "Hotbar Slot Caching" to monitor slot contents before submitting draw requests, paired with "HUD Update Throttling" to skip unneeded interface updates. To mitigate lag when entering worlds, "World Join Optimizer" uses "Enable World Join Optimizer" and a temporary "Grace Period (ticks)" to enforce tight culling while the area loads.
Power consumption and idle background loads are governed under "Background FPS Limit". Adjusting "Unfocused FPS cap" and "Minimised FPS cap" lowers graphics utilization whenever Minecraft loses operating focus or rests in the taskbar. Furthermore, "Menu/Load FPS cap" limits output on splash and title screens, giving loading processes priority.
