Controller Support: Gamepad Setup, Trigger Calibration, and Bindings
A Controller Support guide. Covers Controller Support 10.0.1 on Minecraft 1.21.1.
Controller Support adds native gamepad input and multi-instance split-screen play without locking players into a rigid preset layout. Because gamepads vary widely across manufacturers, the mod ships with blank action slots on first launch so you can enable your device, calibrate its analog axes, and assign every button intentionally.
Enabling Hardware Profiles and Sensitivity
Plug in your gamepad, click the controller icon on the main menu or pause screen to open "Controller Settings" (alongside "Controller Support Config"), and toggle "Enable Controller" on. Hardware profiles recognize layouts including "Xbox 360", "Dualshock 4", and "Nintendo Wii U Pro", while "Debug Mode" helps diagnose raw inputs if a pad behaves unexpectedly.
Before mapping buttons, dial in look and cursor response inside "Controller Settings":
- Adjust "Gameplay Sensitivity" for first- and third-person camera speed ("Camera Horizontal" and "Camera Vertical") and "Menu Sensitivity" for inventory pointer travel ("Mouse Horizontal" and "Mouse Vertical").
- Toggle "Invert Y Axis" if you prefer flight-style vertical camera pitch, and enable "Use Precise Movement" for finer analog stick deadzone and walk control ("Move Horizontal" and "Move Vertical").
Calibrating Analog Triggers
Shoulder axes behave differently across controllers, so open "Trigger Setup" before binding combat actions. Use "Mark As Trigger" or "Unmark As Trigger" to tell the mod which analog inputs represent pull triggers rather than sticks, and separate axis directions using "Positive Triggers" and "Negative Triggers" so "Attack/Destroy" and "Use Item/Place Block" register cleanly without sticking.
Mapping Actions, Menus, and Modded Controls
Inside "Controller Bindings", every action can be set to "Press" or "Hold" behavior. Finalize your modlist before mapping modded actions so adding or removing mods later does not scramble saved bindings:
- Core Movement and World Actions: Bind "Walk Forward", "Walk Backward", "Strafe Left", "Strafe Right", "Sprint", "Jump/Fly Up", "Sneak/Fly Down", "Toggle Perspective", "Drop Item", and "Pause".
- Inventory and Map Navigation: Assign "Inventory", "Cycle Item Left", "Cycle Item Right", "Quick Move", "Split Items", "Left Click", "Scroll", and directional menu steps ("Navigate Up", "Navigate Down", "Navigate Left", "Navigate Right"), plus world-map controls like "Pan Map Horizontal", "Pan Map Vertical", "Zoom In", and "Zoom Out".
Typing with the On-Screen Keyboard and Paper Doll HUD
For signs, commands, and "Open Chat", bind "Toggle Keyboard" to summon the "On-Screen Keyboard", then use "Select Letter", "Move Cursor Left", "Move Cursor Right", "Caps Lock", "Backspace", "Space", and "Enter" straight from your pad. Finally, visit "Paper Doll Options" to customize your corner character readout—toggling "Swinging Arm", "Using Item", and "On Fire" indicators—alongside HUD privacy toggles like "Hide Coordinates" and "In-Game Player Names".
